Not a fan of the word ‘selling’? You’re not alone! It’s a word that many a heart-based entrepreneur struggles with. And if the word makes you feel yucky, you can pretty much guarantee that the activity of selling is going to take a bit of a negative hit too.
But as a business owner, I’m sure you’re also aware, you need to sell. If you want your business to grow you need to promote yourself. And you need to make peace with both the word and the marketing and selling you need to do.
The word ‘Selling’ has a bad reputation
I was recently on a group coaching call and many of us expressed the view that we were not a fan of the word ‘selling’. We were all then asked to share what words and images popped into our minds when we thought about the following words:
It was quite depressing to hear how many negative associations we’d linked to them! Spend a couple of minutes now, writing down your thoughts, feelings and images that spring to mind when you read those words. Surprising, right!?!
No matter how you look at it, selling does tend to have a bad reputation. And a very tarnished image about it. You’re not alone if you associate it with being masculine, materialistic, spammy, pushy and even deceitful. It feels uncomfortable and yukky to do it, so it’s no wonder you find yourself shying away from marketing and promoting your business.
Female and heart-based entrepreneurs often struggle with selling
It’s an area many a heart-based business owner struggles with. For many females, we’re not a fan of the word ‘selling’ as it’s a skill that’s traditionally associated with males. But if you want to move forward, you need to find a way to get past these negative connotations.
As this article in Entrepreneurs Europe states:
Even the brightest ideas are useless if you can't do one thing: sell them. Until you develop that skill, you'll be forever stalled on your road to success.
As the article points out, our struggle with selling goes back generations. Society dictated that it was seen as pushy or deceitful, a male trait even, to sell. Unladylike at best, immoral at worst.
And that’s all well and good - but how can we get past this? You can change your view of business as a whole, as shared in my recent blog: What is a heart-based business and how do you grow in a heart-based way? But there’s more you can do, to become happier with the selling side of your business.
Are you going to reframe or reword?
To move forward, you have a decision to make. You need to decide if you’re going to reframe or reword - because you need to do something if you want your business to grow.
Can you equate selling to serving, for example? This reframe is a popular one among service-based businesses, as it helps switch it from a belief around personal gain to one around being of service. You can also switch your focus around selling. Instead of focusing on the monetary value of a sale, focus instead on how many people you are helping.
However, if you’re struggling with the concepts of personal gain and the monetary value you’re receiving, it’s also worth working on your money mindset. When you have negative beliefs around receiving money and being worthy of it, you really do need to work on clearing them so they don’t sabotage your success or hold you back from your full potential. I’d personally recommend Denise Duffield Thomas’ Money Bootcamp or her books, Chillpreneur, Lucky Bitch: A Guide for Exceptional Women to Create Outrageous Success and Get Rich Lucky Bitch!. You could also look into having Rapid Transformational Therapy® (RTT) around your money beliefs and self-sabotaging behaviours too.
Another option you easily implement is changing the words you use to describe the concept of selling.
Not a fan of the word ‘selling’? Here are some alternative words you can use instead
If you’re not a big fan of the words ‘selling’ and ‘sell’, why not opt instead to use an alternative word? Choose a word you’re happy with and your audience can relate to. Not sure what to go with? Here’s some to get you started:
If you’re not a fan of the word ‘selling’, you’re not alone. Many entrepreneurs - and especially heart-based entrepreneurs - struggle with it too. But when you struggle with the word, you’re much more likely to struggle with the action. And that’s not good when your business needs you to step up and market it if you want it to grow!
No matter how you look at it, selling does tend to have a negative association for many of us. But as detailed above, there are several things you can do to overcome this. You can work on your beliefs and behaviours around selling, as well as changing your vocabulary around it. You’re then ensuring it’s not something that is going to continue holding you back from the financial and business success you’re looking to achieve.
